Kingston Health Sciences Centre’s (KHSC) Breast Imaging Kingston (BIK) team is inviting members of the community to make breast health a priority by attending a special breast screening event taking place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and this evening event will feature mocktails, music and mammograms, giving attendees the chance to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere while accessing life-saving breast screening and education.

Hosted by Dr. Doris Jabs, KHSC’s Rose of Hope Clinical Chair in Breast Health, the event is designed to encourage women, two-spirit, trans and nonbinary individuals who are 40 years of age or older, to come together to make screening feel less intimidating and spark conversations about breast health.

“This event is about reminding people that routine screening doesn’t need to feel scary and that it saves lives,” says Dr. Jabs. “We’ll be offering a welcoming, safe space where everyone can feel comfortable, supported and empowered to take charge of their breast health.”

A mammogram takes less than 10 minutes to complete and can detect breast cancer early, when treatment is often easier and more effective.

How it works:

  • RSVP online to book your mammogram during the event (spots are limited).
  • Or attend the event in person and choose from a list of reserved follow-up appointment dates and times.

Everyone is welcome to the attend the event, however mammogram screening appointments are limited to women, two-spirit, trans and nonbinary individuals who:

  • are between 40 and 74 years of age,
  • have a valid Ontario health card,
  • have no personal history of breast cancer and no current abnormal breast symptoms, and
  • have not had a screening mammogram in the past 11 months.

A referral from a primary care provider is not required for breast screening.
