An inaugural event hosted by the Francophone & French-speaking Staff Community Group brought together staff, physicians, volunteers and learners from across Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) to connect, practice French and build new relationships in a welcoming and supportive environment.
For Pamesha Seeruttun, member of the Francophone & French-speaking Staff Community Group, the idea grew from the staff community group’s desire to create a space where colleagues could connect in both of Canada's official languages.
"As someone who is bilingual, I understand how meaningful it can be to connect with others in both official languages," said Seeruttun. "We wanted to create a relaxed and welcoming space where people could practise their French, build confidence and connect with people from across KHSC."
Designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of French, the gathering featured informal conversations, interactive language activities and resources from ACFOMI and Centre Culturel Frontenac about local French-language services and events.
For attendees, the informal atmosphere helped make practicing a new language feel approachable.
"I’m learning French, and it was a great opportunity to practise," said Dr. Robyn Houlden, professor and chair of the Division of Endocrinology. "The true Francophones were very kind about my terrible French."
Having spent the past few years learning French, Dr. Aws Almufleh, Cardiologist and Physician Lead of the Heart Function Clinic, recognized how events like these help advance inclusion at KHSC.
"I think these events are about much more than practicing French," said Almufleh. "They create connections between colleagues who might never otherwise meet, they celebrate the diversity of our workforce and they foster a culture where continuous learning is encouraged.”
The positive response has organizers looking ahead to future gatherings.
"I hope this is just the beginning," said Seeruttun. “My goal is for this to become a space where people feel comfortable coming together, learning from one another and building connections. Whether someone speaks French every day or is just learning a few words, everyone has a place at the table."
Attendees echoed that enthusiasm.
“I hope this becomes a regular tradition at KHSC because I think it has the potential to build language skills and a stronger sense of community,” shared Almufleh. “I'll definitely be back for the next one - bien sûr”
