This conversation is for you

Decisions made here affect more than today's patients. They can influence who works here, what care is available close to home and how health care evolves across our region.

Before we make those decisions, we want to hear from you.

You may be:

  • A patient or family member who has received care at KHSC
  • Someone who lives in the region and may need hospital care in the future, or has ideas about what health care should look like in the years ahead
  • A health care worker or caregiver who sees the challenges facing patients and families

Whatever brings you to this conversation, your experience and perspective can help shape what comes next.

What makes KHSC different?

Every hospital in Ontario is under pressure, but three things make our situation unique.

We're here for all of Southeastern Ontario.

When someone in our region needs highly specialized care – like minimally-invasive robotic surgery, CAR T-cell therapy to treat cancer, or PET-CT imaging to diagnose a cardiac condition, they come to us. That means our decisions affect a much bigger area than just Kingston.

We're a teaching and research hospital.

As an academic health sciences centre, we don't just provide care - we help discover better care, and we train the people who will deliver it. Most Ontario hospitals don't do this.

We're building something new.

A new hospital is only part of the vision. We are working together with municipal and academic partners to create a health innovation district – the first of its kind in Ontario – where hospital care, university research and health companies come together to help develop and improve health care.

The questions we're asking

As we plan, we're asking patients, families, staff, physicians, partners and the wider community to help us answer:

  • How can KHSC achieve its vision where:
    • KHSC is one of Canada's leading academic health sciences centres.
We deliver excellent specialized, people-centred care in a new hospital, built for the needs of people across Southeastern Ontario. We're a hub for health education, research and innovation that brings talent and investment to the region. We use technology to bring expertise closer to where people live. We improve the health and wellbeing of the people and communities we serve. And we get there by working with patients, families, partners and community members.
  • How can KHSC create the greatest value for patients, communities and partners across Southeastern Ontario?
  • In which areas should KHSC lead, partner, support others or deliberately shift resources and attention?
  • What capabilities must be developed now to prepare for future success?
  • How can redevelopment become a catalyst for transforming care, not simply replacing infrastructure?
