Mary Lou Toop

Mary Lou Toop is the Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer for Kingston Health Sciences Centre. Mary Lou is a results-driven leader who enjoys working with an empowered team to achieve sustainable improvements. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant and has extensive leadership experience in Ontario hospitals.
Prior to accepting the position with KHSC, Mary Lou was the Interim Director of Finance with Prism Eye Institute in the Greater Toronto Area. She has provided leadership at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto in the areas of finance, information management and technology, health records and in support of research teams. Mary Lou also provided interim leadership at the Brant Community Health System supporting finance, decision support and their project improvement team. She held several senior leadership positions within the finance portfolio at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto before she became the Chief Financial Officer. Earlier in her health care career, she held executive positions at the St. John’s Rehabilitation Hospital, Lakeridge Health Corporation, Markham Stouffville Hospital and North York Branson Hospital.
In her role at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre, Mary Lou will work closely with the financial services and financial planning and analysis teams as well as nutrition services and support services.
In addition to her CPA, CA professional designation, Mary Lou is a member of the Canadian College of Health Leaders and serves on the Board for Burman University in Alberta. During her career in hospital leadership Mary Lou has served on a variety of Ministry working groups including the Health System Funding Data Quality Work Group, a taskforce with Ontario Buys to review and refine purchasing guidelines, and on the Financial Advisory Committee to develop indicators for the OHA’s report card for the hospital industry. She also served as chair of the Rehab/Complex Continuing Care Stakeholder Group which reviewed and refined the application of Health Based Allocation Methodology (HBAM) for those patient populations and was a long-time member of the Health System Funding Advisory Committee.
Mary Lou received her Bachelor of Business Administration from Andrews University in Michigan as well as completing the Executive Program at the Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario. She is a graduate of the first Advanced Health Leadership Program at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, including a week’s extension in England.
