Lorne Kinsella
I became involved in patient and family advisory work through my own lived experience as a renal patient, which fundamentally shaped how I see the health care system. Navigating complex care, including every modality of dialysis, transplants, and many hospital stays, gave me firsthand insight into both the strengths of our system and the gaps that patients and families often face. These experiences motivated me to move beyond being a patient and become an active partner in improving care for others.
Over the years, I have contributed as a patient advisor in a variety of roles and initiatives focused on improving the patient experience, access to care, and communication between care teams and patients. I have worked collaboratively with clinicians, administrators, and fellow patients to ensure that real-world perspectives are meaningfully integrated into decision-making. What matters most to me in this work is making sure patients feel heard, respected, and included, not just in their own care, but in shaping the system itself.
In my role as Co-Chair of the Renal Patient and Family Advisory Committee, I am committed to fostering a strong, respectful partnership between patients, families, and care teams. I believe that better care comes from listening deeply to patient experiences and translating those insights into meaningful change. I value the opportunity to help create a culture where patient voices are not only welcomed but are essential to how care is designed and delivered.
