Epinephrine or Procainamide Challenge Tests

To help us determine if you have a heart rhythm problem, also known as an arrhythmia, we may perform an Epinephrine or Procainamide Challenge. This is a test that looks at the electrical system of your heart. This test may be done if you have an abnormal heartbeat, or a family history of sudden unexplained cardiac death. Your doctor may also ask for this test if an ECG exam shows electrical changes in your heart. This test is done on an outpatient basis.

What to expect:

• We will contact you with an appointment date and time for your test.
• You will not be able to eat or drink anything for four hours before your test. We may also ask you to not take certain medications before the test.
• You will need to arrange a ride home from the hospital and it is recommended not to drive for 24 hours after your procedure.  
• On the day of your test, you will register for your procedure on the first floor of the Armstrong wing. 
• At this time, some blood tests may need to be completed.  
• You will be directed to the CV lab on the third floor of the Armstrong wing. 
• Once inside the CV lab, we will attach a cardiac monitor, blood pressure cuff and oxygen probe to you.  
• An IV will be started in your arm.
• You will have two sticky pads applied to your chest.
• We will give you medication through your IV and ECG exams will be done to monitor your heart before, during and after the test.  
• Once your test is complete you will be given some time to recover. You will then receive your test results and discharge instructions before you go home.
