Neurology is a branch of health care that deals with conditions of the nervous system. The nervous system is a complex collection of nerves and cells that transmit signals between different parts of your body. It is essentially your body’s electrical wiring. Our Neurology service provides a wide range of care for adult patients as well as ongoing care for patients with long lasting neurological diseases that require specialized care and supervision.
Neurology services includes the Electroencephalogram (EEG) department at KGH. An EEG is a painless test that detects electrical activity in your brain. We use an EEG to evaluate you if you have had a seizure or if you are suspected of having had a seizure. It is also used as an indicator for brain function following a head trauma, infectious disease of the nervous system and in the evaluation of the causes of a psychiatric problem. If you have a neurological problem the treatment options that are available to you can range widely and depend on the type of care you require. They can include everything from a referral to a physiotherapist, to the prescription of medications, to a recommendation that you undergo a surgical procedure. There are both inpatient and outpatient treatments available at KGH for neurology patients.
Inpatient care
As an inpatient you will most likely be given a room on the seventh floor of our Kidd wing (Kidd 7). If you are looking to locate a patient who has been admitted to the hospital you can read more on our find a patient page.
As an inpatient, you will receive care from a health-care team that is made up of a number of different individuals. Who is on your team depends on the type of care you require. These interprofessional teams will always include doctors and nurses, but other individuals such as patient care assistants, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and dietitians, just to name a few, may also be involved in your care. When you are at KGH, you can always count on a range of people to play a key role in your health-care journey. Outpatient care
As an outpatient, you may be referred to a Neurology clinic here at Kingston General Hospital or at Hotel Dieu Hospital. You must be referred to one of these clinics by your doctor or another health-care provider. Outpatient care is also available through our outreach clinics in Smiths Falls, Brockville and Weeneebayko.
