At Kingston Health Sciences Centre, Patients and Families are at the centre of everything we do.
At Kingston Health Sciences Centre, patients and families are at the centre of everything we do.

Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is a community of people dedicated to working with patients and families to transform their experiences through innovative and collaborative approaches to care, knowledge and leadership. As southeastern Ontario’s leading centre for complex-acute and specialty care, and home to the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario, KHSC serves almost 500,000 people.

Fully affiliated with Queen’s University, KHSC is a research and teaching hospital and is home to more than 2,000 health care students and more than 180 researchers, and has been named one of Canada’s top 40 Research Hospitals by Research Infosource. Partnering with patients and families is how we’re making steady progress towards our aim of Transforming Care, Together. Patients' journeys through KHSC can be complex. By partnering with you and your family, we’ll work as a team to make sure you have the best possible experience every step of the way. That’s why we put you at the centre of everything we do.

As a patient or family member, you will notice a few things that make KHSC different from other hospital organizations. Our patient- and family-centred practices ensure that everyone who works, learns or volunteers at KHSC provides the same high standard of care, in partnership with you and your family.

Standards of Care

Whiteboards

Whiteboards have been placed in all patient rooms. These boards will make it easy for you, your family and the rest of your care team to communicate with one another. You should see a whiteboard near your bed and each section should be updated on a regular basis.

Identification Badge

Everyone who enters your room will wear an ID badge at chest level, with their name and position, so you always know with whom you are speaking.

Communicate with HEART

KHSC staff is trained in patient- and family-centred communications that helps us partner with you and your family to ensure you receive the respectful, compassionate care you need.

Hourly Rounding

We will perform hourly rounds during your stay to ensure that you are seen by a staff member at a minimum every hour. We will check on your comfort and safety. See a member of your care team if you need help with pain management, going to the washroom or anything else you may need.
