Billing and expenses

If you are a resident of Ontario and have a valid health card, the cost for most of your care should be covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). However, there may be some additional costs associated with your care that are not covered by OHIP or your personal/workplace insurance plan. In these cases you will be billed for these expenses. The following are examples of some of items where OHIP does not cover the cost:

  • A semi-private or private room
  • Crutches, fibreglass casts, canes or walkers 
  • Ambulance services and transportation services arranged by the family
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Reversal surgery  

If you live in Ontario but are not in possession of a valid health card, you are responsible for all costs associated with your care and stay at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and you will be required to pay for the expenses listed on your bill before leaving the hospital.

Bills can be paid at the cashier’s office and we have an office at each hospital site:

The Patient Accounts Office at our Hotel Dieu site is located on Jeanne Mance 6 and the office is open from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. For information and details about patient invoice and payment, please call 613-544-3310 extension 2187. Payment can be made by credit card or by depositing cheques in locked drop box.

The Cashiers Office at our Kingston General site is located near the main entrance off Stuart Street, behind the Tim Horton's in the lobby and is open from Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to ­12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Payments can be made by cash or cheque, or debit and credit card.

If you would like to discuss any of the costs associated with your care, or to make arrangements for payment, please call the Accounts Receivable office at 613-548-2362. This office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and is closed on weekends.

Residents from outside of Ontario

If you live in another province, and you have a valid health care insurance card from you home province, standard hospital costs will be covered, provided that you present your valid health care insurance card. Also, services not covered for insured Ontario residents will also not be covered by another province. If you live in another province and do not have a valid health care insurance card from your home province, then you are responsible for all costs associated with your care and stay at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and you will be required to pay for the expenses listed on your bill before leaving the hospital.

If you live outside of Canada, then you are responsible for all costs associated with your care and stay at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and you will be required to pay for the expenses listed on your bill before leaving the hospital.
