Fetal Assessment Unit - Ultrasound

An ultrasound scan is often done at 18 to 23 weeks of your pregnancy. This test lets us see how your baby is growing and developing as well as confirm an estimated due date. The ultrasound will be performed by a sonographer and the results will be reviewed a doctor who has trained in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The ultrasound will be done in the Fetal Assessment Unit located on Kidd 5, to the right of the main elevators. You will find the registration desk behind the glass block wall.

If you are a physician of midwives office, please click here for Fetal Assessment Unit instructions on how to book an appointment for your patient.

An ultrasound is a non-invasive test that uses sound waves which allow us to see your baby. An hour before the procedure begins, you should have two cups of fluids. It is important that you do not go to the bathroom after drinking the fluids, so that your bladder has a chance to fill. A full bladder will allow us to see your uterus easier. When the procedure is about to begin, a gel will be applied to your stomach. The sonographers will then use a special wand to view your uterus and take measurements of your baby. We encourage you to ask any questions you have during the procedure. We are always happy to share information with you.

The Fetal Assessment Unit also offers a special program that will allow your ultrasound images to be sent to you digitally so you can share them easily with your friends or family. This service, called Tricefy is available at a cost of $25. If you would like more information please speak to a staff member in the ultrasound clinic.

Biophysical Profile

A biophysical profile is another type of ultrasound test that is available in the Fetal Assessment Unit. It takes about 30 minutes to complete and will give you and your caregiver specific information about the well being of your baby. Traditionally, this is a test that is done in the later stages of pregnancy. If you need this test, your caregiver will refer you to the clinic and talk to you about why you need it.
